Whitireia creative writing graduate Feterika Sao, 2013

Feterika Sao, shown here with literacy tutor Carol Legge, graduated from Whitireia Community Polytechnic with a Bachelor of Creative Writing in 2013. Sao was unable to read or write until he was 30, when – spurred by embarrassment that his young niece could read better than he could – he enrolled in a literacy class. Legge, his tutor, recognised Sao's potential as a writer when he devised an elaborate story in response to a class exercise. Sao enrolled in Whitireia's creative writing programme in 2010, and by 2013 had published a story and written a screenplay. He was the first in his family to receive a degree.
