Poet and Victoria University English-literature lecturer Bill Manhire, shown here in 1986, began teaching an undergraduate creative writing course at the university in 1975. Over time the course grew increasingly prestigious and competitive, spawning first a Masters in Creative Writing in 1997 and then a fully fledged creative-writing school, the International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML), in 2001. Manhire's name was synonymous with Victoria's creative writing programme, even after he retired as director of the IIML in 2013.
