Gretchen Albrecht stands in front of her work 'In a shower of gold'. Albrecht emerged in the 1970s with abstract works of acrylic paint which produced a flowing, translucent effect. Her work was reminiscent of New York abstract expressionist Helen Frankenthaler. In the 1980s Albrecht developed the semi-circular hemisphere shape, which was often divided in half, forming quadrants. Although geometric in concept, her paintings had a bright fluidity of colour which gave them a warmth and liveliness often lacking in purely abstract works.
