This photograph by Graham Dawson shows Ngāti Kapu children at the settlement around the Tainui marae in Pukekaraka, Ōtaki, in late 1941 or early 1942. Dawson's photographs were part of a study carried out by Ernest and Pearl Beaglehole. The Beagleholes studied a range of features of the community, with an emphasis on educational needs. The work they produced from this research, Some modern Maoris, was controversial. There were objections both to the book's portrayal of Māori poverty and its exposure of Pākehā racist attitudes.
