Emeritus professor Sir Mason Durie (Rangitāne, Ngāti Kauwhata, Ngāti Raukawa) founded Massey University's School of Māori Studies and served as the university's deputy vice-chancellor. Durie organised one of the two initial hui to canvass Māori opinion on the creation of a bicultural reference work.
