Kōrero: Exhibitions and world’s fairs

St Louis Exposition, 1904

St Louis Exposition, 1904

This photograph shows the Palace of Manufactures at the St Louis Exposition in 1904. The exposition, or St Louis World's Fair as it was popularly known, was held to mark the 100th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase – when the United States bought from France over 2 million square kilometres of territory, covering 15 future states. New Zealand put much effort into advertising its tourist attractions with, among other things, lantern slides of the magnificent scenery.
