Ceramic artist Richard Parker grew up in Nelson, where he watched pioneering potters Mirek Smisek and Harry and May Davis at work in the 1960s. Smisek in particular inspired Parker's ambitions to become a potter. Parker trained as a teacher and taught visual and creative arts at secondary schools for seven years before becoming a professional potter. He is shown here applying the finishing touches to some large pieces before firing.
