Kōrero: Crafts and applied arts

Pottery and education were the twin pillars of Doreen Blumhardt's life. She attended art school and trained as a teacher in Christchurch in the 1930s. In 1942 she was employed by Director of Education Clarence Beeby to devise a national programme for arts and crafts in schools. She was head of the arts department of Wellington Teachers' College from 1951 to 1972. In 2003 she established the Blumhardt Foundation, in part to support emerging artists and curators. Throughout her education career Blumhardt worked as a potter and exhibited nationally and internationally.
