Studio pottery emerged in the 1930s and potters sold their work through art societies, in department stores and directly from their studios. Elizabeth Matheson and Olive Jones were two leading members of the early studio pottery community. They worked together at the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington between 1939 and 1940 where they displayed and sold their work.
