The Signal Box, Masterton

The Signal Box, Masterton

The playful Signal Box in Masterton was designed by Wellington firm Melling:Morse Architects and completed in 2008. The house was near to the town's railway station, and the diagonal second storey was a reference to a raised railway signal arm. The extensive use of concrete blocks was evocative of the brutalist houses of the 1970s but, together with the concrete floor, had a modern function as a heat sink to keep the house warm. The house was praised by critics for challenging concepts about what a house should look like.
