Cintra Flats, Auckland

Cintra Flats, Auckland

In colonial New Zealand, the building of flats was avoided because they were reminiscent of 'Old World' tenements. This changed in the early 20th century, when blocks of flats were built in central Auckland and Wellington. During the 1930s a new wave of flat-building occurred in the same cities. This is the moderne-style Cintra Flats in Auckland's Whitaker Place in 1940. The building was designed by Horace Massey and opened in 1936. Its form was strongly horizontal, with window bands and rusticated plaster work, offset by vertical downpipes, stairwells and chimneys.
