The Group, 1936

The Group, 1936

The Group was an association of artists established in Christchurch in 1927 to encourage the showing of experimental art work. The Group held an annual show, which normally included works by many of the emerging painters who transformed New Zealand art in the 1930s and 1940s. Included in this photograph, taken by Olivia Spencer Bower – one of the members of the group – are Rata Lovell-Smith (far left) and Louise Henderson (right). The woman wearing the beret is writer Ngaio Marsh, who also exhibited in the show. Others represented that year included Toss Woollaston and R. N. Field.
