A Nelson tomato-growing family

A Nelson tomato-growing family

In Nelson, families from southern Italy settled an area known as The Wood from around 1905. The climate was ideal for market gardening and tomato growing, enterprises which the Italians developed with great success. The family was at the heart of the community, and children would often help out in the glasshouses after school. The family are (from left) Domenic Albano, Pat Albano, Domenic's children Serafina and Joe Albano, Giuseppe Albano (in rear) and Anthony Albano.
