In 1931 central Napier was largely destroyed by a fire that followed a catastrophic earthquake. In rebuilding the central city, architects mainly employed the art deco and Spanish mission styles. New buildings included W. J. Prouse's art deco Masonic Hotel. The building referenced the former hotel on the site by including a rooftop pergola.
