Burundian drumming and dancing

Burundian drumming and dancing

Burundi drummers and dancers perform at Auckland's international cultural festival, held at War Memorial Park in Mt Roskill in February 2007. Many of New Zealand's small Burundi community arrived as refugees, driven from their home by a civil war that began in 1993, ending in 2005. For refugee communities like the Burundians, cultural traditions can be an important link to a more peaceful time in their past, and can help maintain community contact in a new land.
