Irish dancing, like many other cultural dance forms, has a competitive side. These dancers from the Wellington Irish Society are shown in 2000 after returning from the North American dance championships. Fourth from left is Aislinn Ryan, who won every New Zealand competition for her age group. She then travelled to ‘the worlds’, as Ireland’s national competition is known. In her first attempt in 2003 she was placed sixth, and in her second (2004) she came third. She also appeared in Riverdance.
