Jack Body and Joko Sutrisno, about 1988

Jack Body and Joko Sutrisno, about 1988

As well as being a passionate advocate for New Zealand music, Jack Body was fascinated with the music and cultures of Asia, especially Indonesia. As manager of Gamelan Padhang Moncar, an Indonesian percussion ensemble based at the Victoria University music school since 1977, he has collaborated with local and visiting musicians to create new repertoires for gamelan and other instruments. He is shown here (left) with Joko Sutrisno, a gamelan teacher who visited from 1988 to 1995.
