David Farquhar was taught composition by Douglas Lilburn at Victoria University of Wellington before heading overseas for further study. On his return to New Zealand in the early 1950s he was appointed to the Victoria University music department, and became professor in 1976. During this time he composed a range of instrumental, vocal and orchestral works. He was also the founder president of the Composers Association of New Zealand in 1974. He retired from teaching, but not from composing, in 1993, and died in 2007.
