Following the premiere of Peter Jackson's film The hobbit: an unexpected journey, a fan poses besides the statue of movie character Gandalf at the Weta Cave in Miramar, Wellington, in December 2012. The film, launched at Wellington's Embassy Theatre, was the first of a three-part series, and followed Jackson's acclaimed Lord of the rings trilogy. The success of Jackson's films was highly dependent upon the creative work of Weta Studios, which also won work from other major international film-makers. The Weta Cave, based at Weta Studios, showcased the company's work. A giant sculpture of a movie camera in Courtenay Place, created by Weta Studios, symbolised the importance of film-making in Wellington in the early 2000s.
