Hallie Buckley and Rebecca Kinaston of the University of Otago Anatomy Department carried out research on the kōiwi (human remains) from Wairau Bar. Buckley led research using isotopes (atoms with varying numbers of neutrons), from the kōiwi to learn about the health and diets of the ancient inhabitants of Wairau Bar. This work was done in collaboration with Rangitāne, the tangata whenua (indigenous people) of the area, as part of a project that culminated in the reburial of the kōiwi at Wairau Bar.
