Regional and kinship ties were stronger than national or patriotic ones. Italian clubs such as Auckland’s Club Italiano and Wellington’s Club Garibaldi offered local communities a place to meet, play cards and have a glass of wine. Nelson’s Club Italia celebrated spring and religious festivals and supported community activities, which helped Italians integrate into local life.
