William Mason attended Goldsmith's College and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London in the 1940s and designed his first textiles then. He returned to New Zealand in the early 1950s, supporting himself in various jobs and exhibiting paintings. In 1961 he won a wallpaper design competition and set up Mason Handprints with the prize money. The company produced textiles and moved into wallpapers in 1965. Mason later sold the business to Resene Paints. This is Mason in his studio in Wellington's Marion Street, around 1970.
