Invasive species, particularly rats, are one of the research interests of University of Auckland ecologist James Russell, seen here at Leigh, with Goat Island in the background. Russell's team carried out a series of experiments in which they studied the way rats invaded small islands. The aim was to develop better ways of controlling and removing invasive species. The subject of one of these experiments, nicknamed Razza the Rat, achieved fame by avoiding recapture for 18 months.
