Botanists Lucy Cranwell (left) and Lucy Moore carry out an ecological field study at Maungapōhatu, Te Urewera, in 1930. In the late 1920s and 1930s 'the two Lucies' carried out field studies in remote locations in Northland, the King Country, the Coromandel Peninsula, the Tararua Range and the Hen and Chickens and Poor Knights islands. They studied coastal marine ecology and seaweeds as well as terrestrial ecology. Cranwell went on to a distinguished career in palynology (the study of pollens) while Moore became a senior botanist with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
