Olsson Swamp dig, 1960 (3 o 3)

Olsson Swamp dig, 1960

Roger Duff (centre, standing in trench) is shown here at the excavation of the Olsson Swamp at Waitara in Taranaki, in January 1960. Duff, a prominent archaeologist, had been director of the Canterbury Museum since 1948. The dig was in search of carvings and other artefacts that may have been buried in the swamp. It was carried out at the invitation of the Taranaki Museum and with the help of many volunteers. Duff introduced a new approach by actively seeking the permission of local iwi.
