Chris Dearden held the chair of classics at Victoria University of Wellington from 1974 to 2002. In the 1970s he introduced courses which did not require knowledge of Latin or Greek, leading to increased classics enrolments. After Dearden retired a collection of essays called Theatres of actions: papers for Chris Dearden (2003) was published to acknowledge his contribution to the field. Dearden is shown here leading a tour at Knossos on Crete in the 2000s.
