Niupepa is the Māori equivalent of Papers Past. It provides web access to 34 newspapers written primarily for a Māori audience between 1842 and 1932. Of the 17,000 pages, 70% are solely in the Māori language, 27% are bilingual and 3% are in English. The project was an initiative of the New Zealand Digital Library Project based in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Waikato. The image is drawn from the site and shows the masthead of Te Puke ki Hikurangi, which first appeared in 1897.
