Mathematicians Charles Semple (left) and Mike Steel are seen in front of the Ark at Gethsemane Gardens, Clifton Hill, Christchurch, in 2006. Semple and Steel had just been awarded a Marsden Grant to investigate the 'Noah's Ark problem'. This involved developing a formula to calculate the conservation value of different species, with the aim of maintaining the greatest amount of biodiversity. The hope is that such a formula would help with decisions on where to direct the limited resources available for conservation.
