Christall Rata with hapene, 2004

Christall Rata holds up hapene, flax modified into a lattice form. Rata, with a background in architecture and design, invented and patented the process of manufacturing hapene. Operating under the name Christall Rata Lowe since her marriage in 2005, she is both an artist and a businesswoman, and is of Ngāti Raukawa, Tainui and Ngāti Maniapoto descent.
