Mathematician Vaughan Jones, born in Gisborne and raised in Cambridge, won the prestigious Fields medal in 1990 for his work on knot theory. Jones developed an algebraic method to closely describe even the most detailed of knots. This in turn proved useful for work on DNA molecules. Jones began his academic career at the University of Auckland and completed his PhD at the University of Geneva. After teaching at a number of American universities he was made professor of mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley, and, from 2011, at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. Jones is pictured here kitesurfing in the Bay of Islands during a trip back to New Zealand.
