Beatrice Tinsley, Yale, 1978

Beatrice Tinsley, professor of astronomy at Yale University, is shown in 1978. Tinsley's research focused on cosmology, the origin and development of the universe. She carried out ground-breaking work on the evolution of galaxies and changes in star populations. Born in England in 1941, Tinsley came to New Zealand when she was five years old, and moved to the US in the early 1960s. She was appointed associate professor of astronomy at Yale in 1975 and professor in 1978. She died of cancer in 1981.
