The Mt Maunganui vacuum refinery (left) and solar refinery (right) are seen with Ocean Wharf and Tauranga Harbour in the background. The refineries are used to make salts of different purities and grain sizes. The plant was built in the early 1970s, when it became apparent that Lake Grassmere would be unable to meet New Zealand’s salt requirements, and that large quantities of salt would need to be imported and processed for local use. The first shipment of 18,144 tonnes of salt arrived from Port Hedland in Western Australia in 1973.
