First salt harvest, April 1949

First salt harvest, April 1949

Workers examine the first salt of any quantity to be harvested in New Zealand. In 1949 the crystallisation ponds were still being constructed, and this salt had formed on the bed of the final concentration pond. About 45 tonnes was harvested by hand and washed in a concrete mixer. It gave great encouragement to the venture.
