The massive volumes of The journals of Captain James Cook represented more than two decades of work by scholar J. C. Beaglehole, and according to critic E. H. McCormick 'displayed to the full his superb gifts as historian and editor'. They were followed by a biography of Cook, widely recognised as Beaglehole's finest work.
