Community service – a punishment for minor crimes including tagging – sometimes involved removing graffiti. The group shown here is at work on the rail corridor in Waitākere City, Auckland. Rail has particular importance for taggers. When graffiti developed in the mid-1970s in New York, ‘bombing’ (illegally tagging) subway trains guaranteed taggers’ names were carried across the city. When graffiti art took off in New Zealand, tagging trains became part of the scene.
