The daily paper for each of New Zealand's main centres required premises that befitted its central economic and social status. Imposing multi-storey buildings to house the printing equipment, editorial services and administrative staff arose in the heart of every large city. This purpose-designed building on Cathedral Square housed Christchurch's Press from 1909. By 2011 it was a category-one listed historic building. It suffered severe damage in the 2010–11 Christchurch earthquakes, and was later demolished.

Why does the photo have the year 1858 written in white ink on the image? While the title lists 1912.
