In 1942, on the occasion of the tercentenary (300th anniversary) of Dutch explorer Abel Tasman's visit to New Zealand, a memorial to Tasman was unveiled in Golden Bay. This photograph shows the unveiling ceremony. The speaker is Eruera Tīhama Tirikātene, the MP for Southern Māori. Others in the photo are Joe Heenan, under-secretary for Internal Affairs (in light-coloured coat, on left), Minister of Internal Affairs William Parry (on right, looking down) and Prime Minister Peter Fraser (next to Parry, in dark, striped suit). The unveiling followed the formal opening of the Abel Tasman National Park, another tercentenary event.
