In 2013 Footnote Dance, New Zealand's oldest contemporary dance company, was 28 years old. Founding director Deirdre Tarrant continued in that role until 2012, when she joined the company's arts advisory panel. Like other contemporary dance companies, Footnote was government-subsidised. In the early 1990s it shifted from a project base to receiving ongoing funding from government arts funding body Creative New Zealand. This photograph shows a 1991 production, Up, up and away.
