Christmas on a sun-baked New Zealand beach was the unconventional setting that director Michael Hurst envisaged for the Auckland Theatre Company's 2006 production of Shakespeare's Twelfth night. The set, designed by John Verryt, was primarily a steeply raked stretch of sand. Lighting effects provided most of the stage atmosphere, scene changes and other visual dynamics. Lighting designer David Eversfield said, 'I didn't attempt to copy on stage what our sun produces so wonderfully ... but it did give me clues when choosing the type of lamps that would be useful in sculpting a sunset.'
