Eric McCormick and Joe Heenan at work

This photograph, taken by John Pascoe on 5 July 1946, shows Eric McCormick (at left, with cigarette) and Joe Heenan (centre) at work on the early stages of the war history publications. The editor of the war histories, Major General Howard Kippenberger is on the right.  Pascoe, McCormick and Heenan had first worked together on the centennial publications in the Department of Internal Affairs in the late 1930s. Heenan was the under-secretary of the department and McCormick was the editor of the centennial publications. Pascoe was responsible for the illustrations. With 11 book-length surveys and 30 pictorial booklets, the centennial publications were a major publishing venture. However, they were exceeded in scale by the war histories, which, when completed by the Government Printer, comprised 45 volumes and 24 shorter episodes and studies.
