The Foveaux Harmony Chorus of Invercargill is one of many barbershop choruses that have been established in New Zealand since the 1980s. There are both men's and women's choruses, which recruit keen singers who may or may not have formal musical training. Singers usually learn their music by ear and by repetition. Barbershop is a style of close-harmony singing that originated in the United States in the late 19th century. In barbershop competitions, choruses are judged both on the quality of their singing and on showmanship – the way they interpret songs through movement and actions.
