Prominent Māori theatre performer Jim Moriarty is seen here in one of his best-known roles, the solo show Michael James Manaia by John Broughton. The play, about a disturbed Vietnam War veteran, was first performed at Wellington's Downstage Theatre in 1991. Moriarty later toured the play nationally and to the Edinburgh Festival. This photo shows a 1994 production at Taki Rua Theatre. Moriarty later formed Te Rakau Hua O Te Wao Tapu Trust, a performing arts organisation working with at-risk young people.
