The tall and imposing crime writer and theatre director Ngaio Marsh (centre) was asked in 1941 to work with the drama society of Canterbury University College (later the University of Canterbury). She maintained her involvement with the society for more than 30 years. Here she is directing Jennifer Barrer and Mervyn Glue in a production of Hamlet in 1958. The society eventually acquired a purpose-built theatre on the Ilam campus, named the Ngaio Marsh Theatre.
