Lake Mangakaware whare

Lake Mangakaware whare

The floor of a Māori whare (house) was uncovered during a 1969 archaeological excavation of a pā beside Lake Mangakaware in Waikato. In the centre is a hearth used for heating the structure. Information derived from such historic sites can reveal much about how Māori lived before the arrival of Europeans.
