Kōrero: Art galleries and collections

Historian Alexander McLintock curated the National Centennial Exhibition of New Zealand Art, which toured the country from 1940 to 1941 as part of wider centennial celebrations. It was the first curated survey of New Zealand art. Here, McLintock (third from right) is supervising the hang for the opening of the exhibition in Dunedin in February 1940. Artist Gordon Tovey is standing next to McLintock holding a painting. His work 'Winter sun, Lake Hayes' was included in the exhibition, and perhaps is the work he is holding.
