Lesbian ball

Lesbian ball

A vibrant alternative social scene existed in New Zealand's larger cities in the 1980s and 1990s, when women-only and lesbian and gay dances were regularly held. Women are shown here enjoying themselves at a lesbian ball in Wellington in the mid-1990s. Venues for women's and queer dances included local universities, town halls and community halls. Music was supplied by DJs rather than live bands.
