Samoan-born Albert Wendt is New Zealand's leading Pacific writer of fiction in English. He has been influential in developing a written Samoan literature in English, drawing from the oral tradition. In 2012, when this photograph was taken, Wendt won the Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement for Fiction.
