In the early 1970s New Zealand established geothermal developments in Indonesia. Because of a lack of local expertise there and in other developing countries, the New Zealand government and the University of Auckland set up the Geothermal Institute to train foreign students. The first students arrived in 1979 to undertake the university’s diploma course in geothermal technology. These Indonesian and other students were visiting the geothermal power station at Wairākei.
