The 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document, is under the statutory guardianship and care of Archives New Zealand in Wellington. Different sheets were taken around the country for signing by Māori chiefs, and nine of these survive. In 2017, these documents – eight in Māori and one in English (the Waikato sheet) – were moved to the National Library of New Zealand in Wellington and put on public display as part of the He Tohu exhibition. These people are viewing the treaty at Archives New Zealand on Waitangi Day, 6 February, in 2013. Around 400 people visited that day.
