New Zealander Wayne Schwass, shown taking a mark for the Sydney Swans in 2001, became an Australian rules football player after his family moved to Melbourne. Between 1988 and 2002 Schwass played 282 games, winning two 'best and fairest' awards, helping North Melbourne's Kangaroos win the premiership in 1996, and playing four finals series with the Sydney Swans. Little known in New Zealand, and with few New Zealanders playing for Australian clubs, Schwass gained more company in the 2010s when the code began to expand. New Zealand recruits included Maia Westrupp, Joe Baker-Thomas, Kurt Heatherley and Shem Tatupu.
